On day one we drove from Phoenix to Albequerque where we spent the night. The drive through the desert then through pine forests and back to desert was beautiful and we stopped along the way to enjoy some of the scenery. Pouring rain welcomed us into New Mexico where we were grateful to find a bed and some warm dinner.
Sunday morning we woke up early and drove to Santa Fe. We detoured to see a Pueblo along the way and took in some roadside art. At the visitor center on the highway we stopped to "vote."
We lucked out in Santa Fe and stumbled upon a huge Native American craft festival in the main square. We had lunch in a restaurant overlooking the square and listened to the rhythmic drumming and chanting.
Tired from all the walking we investigated a Japanese bath house by the side of the road. Nestled on a hill, it was an oasis of tranquility with bamboo-lined paths and cedar baths and saunas to melt away all the cares of the road.
