Arcosanti

This weekend we drove north out into the wilderness, down a dirt road to Arcosanti. It's a 70's-looking colony designed by Italian architect Paolo Soleri as a sustainable alternative to modern living. Residents live in studios around a central core. They use passive solar energy and wind power to run many of the daily necessities and they all share in the work of running the community. We had fun on the tour, learning about the ingenious design and the work of making the signature bells that support the residents. We were going to stay for lunch in the organic cafe but the flies vastly outnumbered the diners so we decided to try our lunch luck in a less sustainable but more sanitary locale.
