Weds. night mom flew in from Vegas. G prepared a treat and took her to the Sanctuary spa. Mom reports that the massage was quite good, and G got long-awaited acupuncture. On Friday G and Mom went to the botanical gardens and then into the Scottsdale mall to escape the heat.

Saturday morning mom and I went hiking on South Mountain. Just when we were thinking about turning around, some fellow hikers directed us to a secret mountain tunnel (a twenty foot hole in a boulder that you could walk through). On our way back we spotted a gila monster and a rabbit we presumed would be the gila monster's afternoon snack.
Saturday afternoon we celebrated Cinco de Mayo in Chandler. The party left something to be desired but the chihuahuas dressed for chihuahua races (no, really, they race) and the Chanlder museum entertained us for what was left of the day. Saturday night mom took us to Cheesecake Factory where we topped off a big dinner with an even bigger piece of cake.
Sunday we decided to take a roadtrip. We piled into the car and headed out to Maricopa city (about thirty miles South of Phoenix). Fifteen miles from the closest hint of civilzation we found what we were looking for -- a mountain which we were told had a deposit of green Jasper. We parked our car, crawled under a barbed wire fence, crossed the train tracks and hiked about a mile out into the desert to find the rocks. It was really hot but well worth it!

After our rockhounding we headed even further south to Casa Grande -- the site of 700 year old Native American ruins. The 4 floor ruins were protected under a gigantic metal umbrella like something out of a science fiction movie. Here's a picture of me walking through the "door." Thanks for coming mom! -DZ
